  • Avonlea shawl pattern

Avonlea is a generous crescent shawl, created from two skeins of my hand-dyed Harvest Sport yarn. It brings to life the idyllic, heart-centered community of Anne of Green Gables. The kind we are striving to create in reality.

I come back to this book, over and over, as inspiration for my work. So much of this story centers on finding home, as well as being at home with your very own, quirky self. I think we all feel that way: that there's a part of us that doesn't quite fit and that is also longing for a sense of home and place where we belong.

This shawl is a beautiful combination of simple knitting with a lovely lace edging that adds a bit of fun to your finishing.

Avonlea is an excellent beginner shawl and is likewise entertaining for the intermediate knitter. My sample uses two low-contrast colors: the color shifting creates a bit of fun to strike the perfect balance between soothing knitting and excitement at seeing a gentle color change. You can also use higher contrast colors to create a more dramatic edging, or two skeins of the same color.

Things that will make knitting this pattern easier for you:

    • Instructions are charted and written
    • The pattern has lots of helpful stitch counts, at various points in the project, so you can make sure you're on track
    • Yarn weights (in grams) are given at various points to ensure you use most of your yarn, without playing yarn chicken

Finished size: 80 inches (203 cm) wingspan and 14 inches (36 cm) deep

Yarn requirements: 620 yards of sportweight yarn in two coordinating colors, or 2 skeins of Harvest Sport in coordinating colors

Gauge and needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm), or size needed to obtain this gauge: 17 stitches and 37 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch, blocked

Other materials needed: Stitch markers, scale for weighing yarn, yarn needle for weaving in ends
